The chemistry and physico-chemical properties of [n]helicenes, whose peculiar screw-shaped skeleton results from the ortho-condensation of more than 5- or 6-membered aromatic rings, continuously stimulate considerable interest. Their inherent helical chirality confers to carbo- and heterohelicenes excellent chiroptical properties, such as huge optical rotations and strong circular dichroism activity, making them valuable functional precursors for applications such as nonlinear optics, luminescent materials, or, possibly, chiral wave guides. Moreover, much effort is currently devoted toward the modulation of the chiroptical properties of helicenes upon irradiation or redox processes in the case where photo- or electroactive units are present in their structure.
The objectives of the FUNHEL project are: (i) preparation of photoactive helicenes for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties; (ii) electroactive TTF-helicenes for helical conducting radical cation salts; (iii) surface reactivity of bromo-helicenes; (iv) spintronic applications of helicenes.
